The Concept

OUR OBSERVATION :

We’ve been living in Germany for years with our families. Our children are growing up in Hamburg and we love it here.

“I’ve been taking German lessons for almost as long as I’ve been here, but I’ve never had a lesson on the local flora and fauna.” Lauriane

When we asked around among our local and expatriate acquaintances, we couldn’t find any local bilingual educational resources enabling families and visitors to get to grips with both Nature and the city. And yet, in our eyes, Nature and its inhabitants can only really exist when they can be identified and named.

To connect us with local urban nature – nothing more beautiful than birds

Birds, as reference animals for an environmental awareness project, can effectively engage the public, illustrate complex ecological concepts and reinforce the importance of protecting our environment.

The challenge – to make learning fun and rewarding – in the post-covid and digital age, the younger generation is less inclined to take the time to search and venture out, so we’re building this series as a message of hope that renewal is possible.

With what tools?

  • Place the birds in context – on the ground, in the trees, in the air or on the water – where do we see them?
  • Present them clearly, both in photos and illustrations.
  • Give details of their way of life to help you understand them better
  • Encourage people to retain information through games.

In this way, we hope to encourage public curiosity about protecting nature in the city.

These books are designed to answer the first questions everyone has about birds:

  • What are their characteristics?
  • How can you recognise them?
  • Where and how do they live?
  • How can they be protected?

WHO IS THE SERIES AIMED AT?

EVERYONE – they are not designed to replace scientific and ornithological works:

  • The curious who want to take the opportunity to learn foreign vocabulary.
  • Families who live in the city and are looking for new activities nearby
  • Tourists visiting a town who want to add an environmental angle to their visit
